Talk:Circular scrolling
From MobileDesign
Two discussions I think we need to have about this page, so I have started our first Talk page about it. Very exciting!
[edit] Sorted lists only?
"The list must be sorted... or else beginning and end has no meaning. Is this pattern relevant only to a list with unique values??" Starting with the note left by Morten, there do seem to be issues with identifying a list as being an actual list when there is no /obvious/ order to it.
This seems like it might be critical to understanding there is content off the screen. What information does anyone else have to share about actual use of such items that would help with this?
[edit] How well does this really work?
And I have to ask, really how well does it work? I have never designed anything scrolling without some indication you can scroll. I have trouble coming up with a case where 3-5 pixels on the right side would kill a design, space-wise, so don't necessarily follow the premise of getting a display without scrollbars.
In a related vein, a lot of touch or pen devices I have used (even larger kiosks, Redbox being a specific example) have essentially unusable scrollbars. They are too small, the pointer precision and parallax induces too much error, and they are lost in the bezel (on some devices). Therefore, scrollbars are almost always just for indicating function (scroll) and wayfinding (where in the scroll list). It may not be a purely scroll-and-select pattern.
